Yes please revert it (at least what breaks usage with perl 5.8 and/or perl 5.10)
If you are not 100% confident, it never hurts to ask an exp-run.

I'll suggest 3 month from now as a deprecation period, maybe a [HEADUP] mail
announcing this loudly would be a good idea the impact of such a migration.
