Problem with openoffice 2.3.1 on freebsd...

Here's a bit more follow up:
I found that by setting OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP="gnome" before running any of
the office programs does allow them to function, without crashing. If
you are on PC-BSD, you'll need to remove gtk-qt-engine first, since
there is a bug with it and OO which makes icons disappear.
However, it still crashes with the same error if OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP is
set to "kde" or it is unset, which I assume then auto-detects the KDE
desktop I am using.
(process:2527): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2242: initialization
assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function
(process:2527): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion
`initialization_value != 0' failed
(process:2527): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_new: assertion
`G_TYPE_IS_OBJECT (object_type)' failed
