kernel question

Hi,

I would like to recompile the kernel, but my machine
is slow.

Can I use my friend's machine instead? I won't get
root access, so can the kernel source be placed in a
different location (all in my home directory)? (I
don't think he would like to sym link stuff from one
place to the other.)
