ixgbe -- how can I use unsupported SFPs?

I added to my /boot/loader.conf:
hw.ixgbe.allow_unsupported_sfp=1

Yet when I reboot, I still get:

I was attempting to follow this advice:

Will setting a value in the loader.conf file 'set' the 
allow_unsupported_sfp bool to TRUE?  Here is the code:

# grep allow_unsupported_sfp /usr/src/sys/dev/ixgbe/*
/usr/src/sys/dev/ixgbe/ixgbe_phy.c:                             if 
(hw->allow_unsupported_sfp == TRUE) {
