Doh, I forgot to align the patch for RELENG_4 for differences
between RELENG_4 and HEAD. The corrected patch (tested) is at
the same location. Some random statistics:

On an example (high, constant) TX load, I get the following data:

        5.2 -polling    5.2 +polling    4.9 -polling    4.9 +polling
------- --------------- --------------- --------------- ------------
ste(4)  77 Kps          102 Kps         70 Kps          96 Kps
vr(4)   53 Kps          100 Kps         63 Kps          105 Kps

(Kps == kilopackets per second)

One 5.2 box was used for testing, which has both ste(4) and vr(4)
cards, and two 4.9 boxes, which have ste(4) and vr(4), respectively.

Cheers,
