I confess that I am somewhat shocked to learn that such things even
exist, and even a bit more shocked to think that people actually
buy them.

Why would you do that? I mean as opposed to buying a VGA to HDMI
adapter, or just going and buying a new laptop with HDMI output?
(There are some inexpensive ones on eBay that I've been looking
at. I would be happy to point you at some, if you are interested.)

I am kind-of thinking that if your USB->HDMI adapter only speaks
USB 2.0 then it might be sort-of limiting, you know, bandwidth-wise,
and you may perhaps not be entirely happy with the (displayed) results.

USB 2.0 -> 480mbps (theoretical max)
USB 3.0 -> 5 Gbit (theoretical max)
DVI single-link -> 3.96 Gbs (theoretical max)
HDMI 1.0/1.2 -> 4.95 Gbps (theoretical max)
HDMI 1.3 -> 10.2 Gbps (theoretical max)
