mixer not in the loop

Got great sound but the mixer is completely out of the loop, controls 
nothing. The levels controls of xmms and firefox/flash works but I would 
like to have the OSS mixer control the various levels but it does not. I 
believe I can recall the mixer working when I installed the box a few 
weeks ago... surely I screwed something up.

Someone's got an idea on where to start?
