Setting audio input source for Darkice using mixer: can't set vol??

It's unclear what your problem is. You cannot set 'vol' as a recording
source, it is an output device. You conclude correctly that your
recording devices are mic and mix.

Actually the box that's sitting in front of me can do this:

$ mixer
Mixer vol      is currently set to  75:75
Mixer pcm      is currently set to  75:75
Mixer speaker  is currently set to  75:75
Mixer line     is currently set to  75:75
Mixer mic      is currently set to   0:0
Mixer cd       is currently set to  75:75
Mixer rec      is currently set to   0:0
Mixer igain    is currently set to   0:0
Mixer ogain    is currently set to  50:50
Mixer line1    is currently set to  75:75
Mixer phin     is currently set to   0:0
Mixer phout    is currently set to   0:0
Recording source: vol

Of course it's a totally different system running FreeBSD 8.0 RELEASE 
32bit as opposed to 64bit. Also it has a much older sound card which may 
have better support??

Anyway this is what I'm after as currently I can't get my 
Darkice/Icecase2/Drupal5 streaming service working as there's no sound 
input!!

I think it's probably just the driver for the HD audio interface in my 
view. But how to sort or who to go to, to help sort??
