mixer is telling me that "mic" is the only recording device. It won't let
me set anything else as the recording device other than "mic"

jello# mixer +rec vol
mixer: unknown recording device: vol
usage: mixer [-f device] [-s | -S] [dev [+|-][voll[:[+|-]volr]] ...
       mixer [-f device] [-s | -S] recsrc ...
       mixer [-f device] [-s | -S] {^|+|-|=}rec rdev ...
devices: vol, pcm, speaker, line, mic, rec
 rec devices: mic
