soundblaster awe64 (isa): full-duplex? [solved!]

After reading a little bit on soundblaster 8-bit vs 16-bit DMA asymmetry
I tried the following and it immediately helped:
$ sysctl dev.pcm.0.rec.vchanformat=s8

Even skype works OK :-)

P.S. shouldn't sbc/sb16 driver be smart enough to set some like this for
itself as default ?
