Sound problems (hangs and distored output) on current

I am using the ICH chipset in my laptop (Inspiron 8600) and I find than
after a short time (eg a minute or so) the sound tends to get distorted - it
isn't clipping, it sounds like low quality sample rate conversion (ie
buzzing/beating on some sounds).
The music is being played with Amarok using the xine output plugin which (I
think) is outputting at 44.1kHz. If I switch to using arts configured to
output at 48kHz it used to sound better, however since I upgraded it locks
my system up after about 5 seconds :(
I don't get a panic but that may be a problem with X running.. I will try
and get a backtrace.
The system is running -current as of July 4th.
