I didn't see information on the wireless setup (e.g. ifconfig commands to setup and/or status to show final operating syste). Does this happen on all channels? What else is running on the machine with the ap? What is the network traffic mix (e.g. tx vs rx)? I know several groups using the Alix board in similar configs to run production ap's with >10 users but you will need to tune the system for best operation. Under extreme wireless network load the PCI bus becomes a bottleneck and causes the host to be unable to setup each beacon frame in real-time to satisfy NextTBTT requirements. Look at how the SWBA mechanism works in the driver and the hw.ath.hal.sw_brt and hw.ath.hal.dma_brt tunables. Otherwise stuck beacon conditions can be caused by the ap not getting access to the wireless medium due to it being busy. You should sniff traffic around the time of a problem for clues. There are also h/w registers you can observe (e.g. with athregs) to see how busy the medium is from the POV of the ap. There have been chip bugs related to this condition but doing a reset should always restore operation. If this isn't happening should be able to diagnose what's going with the existing facilities (e.g. athdebug msgs). Understand however that building a product ap is nontrivial and the FreeBSD ath driver can easily be optimized better for this purpose. In which case you have to either select the correct pcmX device or set hw.snd.default_unit=X to the correct codec. Gnome currently doesn't seem to have the ability to deal with multiple codecs for different outputs, which kinda sucks... Most of my boxes have (desktop boards) have different hda codecs for front panel, rear, digital and HDMI ports. -- Gary Dunn, Honolulu osp@aloha.com http://openslate.net/ http://e9erust.blogspot.com/ Sent from Slate001 From info at martenvijn.nl Fri Jul 10 18:38:54 2009 From: info at martenvijn.nl (Marten Vijn) Date: Fri Jul 10 18:39:01 2009 Subject: ath0 / wlan0 on 8.0 In-Reply-To: <4A5601CB.3060809@freebsd.org> References: <1247090347.10461.7.camel@mvn-desktop> <4A5601CB.3060809@freebsd.org> Message-ID: <1247251131.5235.147.camel@mvn-desktop> On Thu, 2009-07-09 at 07:42 -0700, Sam Leffler wrote: > Marten Vijn wrote: > > hi all, > > > > When benchmarkmarking an ath0 card an I get these errors. > > After a could (~10) no traffic is possible anymore. > > > > "no traffic is possible" doesn't say enough. I am not building a product, I am using FreeBSD wifi / networking env and as show case of working Opensource Software. IHMO the benchmarking could help harden to wlan drivers and FreeBSD based accesspoints. I expect to double the clients in the benchmark in the coming weeks. Then I will do more testing. Please let know how I can support to create usable (debug) output. thanks for your reply, Marten > > Sam > -- http://martenvijn.nl Marten Vijn http://martenvijn.nl/trac/wiki/soas Sugar on a Stick http://bsd.wifisoft.org/nek/ The Network Event Kit http://har2009.org 13th-16th August http://opencommunitycamp.org 26th Jul - 2nd August From sam at freebsd.org Fri Jul 10 20:13:37 2009 From: sam at freebsd.org (Sam Leffler) Date: Fri Jul 10 20:13:43 2009 Subject: ath0 / wlan0 on 8.0 In-Reply-To: <1247251131.5235.147.camel@mvn-desktop> References: <1247090347.10461.7.camel@mvn-desktop> <4A5601CB.3060809@freebsd.org> <1247251131.5235.147.camel@mvn-desktop> Message-ID: <4A57A0EF.5060409@freebsd.org> Marten Vijn wrote: > On Thu, 2009-07-09 at 07:42 -0700, Sam Leffler wrote: > >> Marten Vijn wrote: >> >>> hi all, >>> >>> When benchmarkmarking an ath0 card an I get these errors. >>> After a could (~10) no traffic is possible anymore. >>> >>> >> "no traffic is possible" doesn't say enough. >> > > Retested for beta-1 > - ping does not respond any more. > - the client loses associations. > > see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfE-YskT7XM > for a screen cast > > > >> Do you see beacons from the ap? >> > > - I still see beacon frames > > > >> Are interrupts being received on the ap? Then provide a recipe for reproducing it or sufficient information to diagnose what's going on. 99% of the time I'll not be able to reproduce it because it depends on local conditions. Understand however that months ago was the right time to be doing this kind of testing w/ HEAD; now we are in a code freeze and anything that comes of this will likely not make the release. Sam From fab at math.univ-paris13.fr Sun Jul 12 20:04:33 2009 From: fab at math.univ-paris13.fr (Fabrice Planchon) Date: Sun Jul 12 20:04:41 2009 Subject: thinkpad 560X and pcmcia Message-ID: <20090712194622.GB1553@Orphee.local> Hi, I just installed freebsd 7.2 on an old thinkpad laptop which was collecting dust in a box: a 560X which was previously running Win95 and some (old) linux distribution. While I did not check right before wiping out the hardrive (I do regret...), I remember everything working properly with both windows and linux before it went into storage. Now, everything appears to work properly under freebsd, except for the second pcmcia slot (the thinkpad has 2 slots on top of each other). The top one works with all my pcmcia cards, but not matter which card is inserted in the bottom one, nothing happens (lights on the card connector don't flash, nothing in the logs). I did find the following thread http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-mobile/2007-July/009926.html where the described symptoms are very similar, but the proposed cure did not solve my problem. It appears that the second pcmcia is not assigned an IRQ, but fiddling with /boot/device.hints did not get me anywhere. I am not even sure what the correct syntax would be (in device.hints), in particular I could not even re-assign one the IRQs of the working devices. I cannot totally rule out hardware failure (although usually hardware does not die from sitting in a box...), but any hint at how to figure this out without re-installing windows (to use the IBM EXE utility) would be welcome. Is the iwn wireless driver for Intel Pro 5300 working? (I have read there are some problems. The manual page on the OpenBSD mentions, it is working. Has somebody ported it to FreeBSD?) Any info appreciated. Thanks in advance. lk From vicknesan at bigfoot.com Mon Jul 13 13:46:16 2009 From: vicknesan at bigfoot.com (Vicknesan AYADURAI) Date: Mon Jul 13 13:46:24 2009 Subject: thinkpad 560X and pcmcia In-Reply-To: <20090712194622.GB1553@Orphee.local> References: <20090712194622.GB1553@Orphee.local> Message-ID: <20090713150327.R4783@apu> Hi Fabrice, I've had similar weirdness with IBM ThinkPad PCMCIA slots before. The first was with a ThinkPad 600, in going from FBSD5.4R->6.1R. I eventually managed to get both ethernet cards on the two slots working, and posted what I did here: http://arkiv.freebsd.se/?ml=freebsd-hardware&a=2006-08&t=2305543 About 2-months ago I did a fresh install of 7.1R on a ThinkPad 560X, and again, could only get 1 of the two PCMCIA ethernet cards recognized. This time even my 'solution' above didn't work, and after a few days wrestling, gave up and installed FBSD4.6.2-RELEASE on the same machine, and both cards were immediately detected upon boot-up. This was an adequate solution, sufficient for my simple two-interface router needs at the time. Even without looking at your hardware I'm willing to bet that your two slots work fine, as with both my ThinkPads. Hopefully the link above might work for you - in which case please drop me a mail on how you got it to work! Good luck! vick --- Vicknesan AYADURAI - more relevantly : vicknesan@bigfoot.com On Sun, 12 Jul 2009, Fabrice Planchon wrote: > Hi, > > I just installed freebsd 7.2 on an old thinkpad laptop which was > collecting dust in a box: a 560X which was previously running Win95 > and some (old) linux distribution. So it seems like I only have an IRQ assignement problem, which I don't see how to solve. None of my attempts were sucessful (through /boot/device.hints or /boot/loader.conf). So far, I have tried On Mon Jul 13 2009 at 03:16:42PM +0200, Vicknesan AYADURAI wrote: > I've had similar weirdness with IBM ThinkPad PCMCIA slots before. However, the "link.LNK" syntax appears to be ACPI related, and the thinkpad 560X does not support acpi. I also tried this, http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-mobile/2007-July/009950.html which means hw.pci0.2.INTB.irq="10" but again the syntax does not seem to be recognized (10 or 11 or anything else is irrelevant for that matter). sysctl with the previous hw.* statement returns sysctl: unknown oid 'hw.pci0.2.INTB.irq' out of boredom, I even tried recompiling a kernel with the http://monkey.org/freebsd/archive/freebsd-mobile/200403/msg00130.html patch, but it didn't make a difference.... So, how can I re-assign IRQs on my thinkpad 560X ? (since my previous message I have enabled apm, which seems to work ok). the linux boot below appears to assign IRQ 3 to the bottom pcmcia slot. As mentioned by Vicknesan, I could always re-install freebsd 4.6, but that strikes me as not being "the Right solution (tm)". I am willing to experiment further, but any hints will be appreciated ! You can use 'hw.pci.link.0x61.irq=11' for the $PIR syntax that is similar to the above ACPI syntax (for $PIR you use the link's id in the 'Link' column in dmesg whereas for ACPI you use the link device's name). > I also tried this, > > http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-mobile/2007-July/009950.html > > which means > > hw.pci0.2.INTB.irq="10" You might need to do 'hw.pci0.0.2.INTB.irq="11"' becuase of PCI in 7.0 support domains/segments now by default. (I do have an interrupt storm on irq11 with one of the 2 pc cards I plug in, but I think it's the fancy 3Com ethernet/modem card which is at fault. It has to be done in the BIOS, as far as I know. The two devices are seen as a single device by the OS, so there is no way I know of to control it at that level. I hate touchpads and mice (or any other pointer that requires me to move a hand off of the keyboard). But that's why there are so many options. -- R.
