I've been very happy with all my Thinkpads, having run FreeBSD on a
570, A21p, and now a T42p.

I don't use the fancy 3d graphics, and the vanilla xorg server
works well enough with the ATI graphics that I can use xrandr to
have two displays. Suspending via ACPI works, the IBM branded Atheros
wifi works fine, etc.

Caveats:
* Apparently the newer dual core chips aren't able to suspend
and resume with FreeBSD.
* Be sure to choose the IBM wifi, as the Intel wifi works poorly with
FreeBSD.
* In the modern world, the Intel graphics option has the best vendor
support in the opensource driver. Also, this option seems to have the
longest battery life.
