trouble installing free bsd 6.0 on Nec Lavie

looking for tips on getting x to intall/run on my lavie LL750/c
I think the radeon xpress 200m is the prob..
Any help?
Tried running mandrake but after booting off dvd the loader cant find
a cdrom driver....error....no cd rom found.....
It has dvd burner, 512 ram, disp as above on crystal bright screen,
with separate dvd/cd controls above keyboard...
