XFree86 4.3.0 hangs at shutdown on Thinkpad T20

I haven't experienced the same problem with my T22, which is now being
depracated in favour of a T40.

Try setting this loader hint and see if it helps, this helped me with
suspend/resume:-
	hw.syscons.sc_no_suspend_vtswitch=1
