I'm not sure if you have a question?
If your laptop boots from a USB device,
and you have an external harddisk (that is not in use),
and you want to try out FreeBSD,
- just go ahead and try it.

The windows bootloader (2k/xp) can be configured to boot FreeBSD, there
are descriptions on how to do this on the net (Google fro them).
Note: I haven't tried to boot from a usb-attached disk myself (I'm
missing some parts) so I can give you no further advice.

Good luck.
