FWIW, I'm running XFree86-Server-snap on a machine with the i845
chipset, as follows:
usert at kg-htpc# uname -a
FreeBSD kg-htpc.kg4.no 4.9-STABLE FreeBSD 4.9-STABLE #4: Sat Apr 3
16:54:21 CEST 2004 root at kg-htpc.kg4.no:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/HERMES
i386

user at kg-htpc# dmesg | grep agp
agp0: <Intel 82845G (845G GMCH) SVGA controller> mem
0xdff80000-0xdfffffff,0xd0000000-0xd7ffffff irq 2 at device 2.0 on pci0
agp0: detected 8060k stolen memory
agp0: aperture size is 128M

DRM (DRI) doesn't work, but other than that it works fine.
Note: this machine is not a laptop.
YMMV.
