help with SMC 2632W-V2, hostap

hi,
i'm trying to build an access point with an old laptop, and i ordered
the SMC2632W so that i can use it with the wi(4) hostap mode.
unfortunately the vendor sent me the 2632W-V2 which doesn't work.

i've found information about the atuwi driver, but this doesn't
look promising, and i've had better luck on this laptop with 4.10
than 5.x.  i doubt that there is any hope for this card, but is
there anything that i'm missing?  and if not, what is a good 802.11b
card that will work in hostap mode and that i can *reliably* (no
worries about chipset changes) buy from ebay or another vendor?
