does anyone have a recommendation for a solid FreeBSD-based
802.11b/g/n AP package for MIPS-based APs and CPEs?

Agreed, but also see <http://dev.haiku-os.org/ticket/6686>.
I have also proposed to the gentlemen on the cc: that the AP
application search for suitable RF operating parameters within the
guidelines set by the WISP operator, to include, but not limited to
channel, channel width and beacon interval. In fixed wireless, there
is no need for such short beacon intervals. In 2003, Cisco published
a work around which suggested a beacon interval of 4 seconds.
