From zml at FreeBSD.org Fri Oct 2 21:05:45 2009 From: zml at FreeBSD.org (Zachary Loafman) Date: Tue Oct 6 01:54:05 2009 Subject: Seattle-based development job Message-ID: <20091002205344.GB3443@isilon.com> Isilon is hiring for an Infiniband developer position in Seattle, WA. The job listing below doesn't say this explicitly, but within the next couple of years it is our intent to get an IB stack into FreeBSD. If you're looking for a job where you'll have a high chance of directly contributing to FreeBSD and you have a good background in IB, networking or kernel, this job may be for you. Remote employees will be considered on a case by case basis, with higher preference to people in the same timezone. The position is described in detail here: http://hostedjobs.openhire.com/epostings/submit.cfm?fuseaction=app.jobinfo&jobid=290011&company_id=15714&version=1&source=ONLINE&jobOwner=999041&aid=1 If you're interested, send me a resume or submit it through the online system. -- Zach Loafman | Staff Engineer | Isilon Systems From jschauma at netmeister.org Wed Oct 7 01:49:52 2009 From: jschauma at netmeister.org (Jan Schaumann) Date: Wed Oct 7 04:13:32 2009 Subject: multiple openings at Yahoo! Message-ID: <20091007014950.GC10721@netmeister.org> Hello, Yahoo!, the little internet portal that could, has a number of openings for unixy people. It's not secret that Yahoo! is using FreeBSD for a large portion of their hosts, but the job requirements are in general not all that operating system specific. Since there are multiple openings, I won't send the whole job posting, just the one-line summary. If you're interested, please contact me indicating which position(s) you're interested in and consider yourself qualified for. The overall sales pitch for the company goes something like this: "Think about impacting 1 out of every 2 people online--in innovative and imaginative ways that are uniquely Yahoo!. We do just that each and every day, and you could too. After all, it's big thinkers like you who will create the next generation of Internet experiences for consumers and advertisers across the globe. Now's the time to show the world what you've got. Put your ideas to work for over half a billion people." In addition, Y! is a very fun place to work, and there are few places that operate on a scale like this, so you get to solve problems that others won't ever encounter. Anyway, the following are the current openings we have: - Systems Security Engineer http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24441 - Infrastructure Manager- Storage& Data Protection http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24445 - Storage QA Engineer http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24446 - Sr. System Administrator http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24451 - Sr. Software Engineer http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24454 - Senior Systems Engineer/Architect Traffic Management (DNS) http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24459 - Network Engineer- Backbone http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24505 - Network QA Engineer http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24514 - Storage QA http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24520 - Senior Software QA Engineer http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24521 - Network QA Engineer http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24522 - Datacenter Ops Engineer-Lab http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24515 - Network Security Operations Engineer http://careers.yahoo.com/jdescription.php?frm=jsres&oid=24606 All positions are preferably in Sunnyvale, CA, USA. Part-time consulting gig.. Message-ID: Hi all, I wanted to reach out to members of the FreeBSD Community in case any of you might be interested in a part-time consulting position I have available in NYC. We are looking for a FreeBSD system administrator on a contracting basis, not a full time hire (not at this time anyway). (This person HAS to have FreeBSD knowledge, not just Linux.) The two projects this person would help on/advise on are: 1. Setup a process and a tool kit to help us deploy new machines within an hour. So, in case we have a spike in load - we can easily add more machines (right now it takes us a week or so) 2. Devise and implement security policies around how developers will access our machines and who gets root access. Right now, probably 10 - 20 hours a week for a couple of months on the top end (hopefully no more than a month). But, next year - we will probably be looking for someone who can guide and advise (who has done it before) - but does not need to do it do the work necessarily. Please drop me an email if you'd like more details. You can also reach me at 201 258 4636. Thanks! I was happily (and naively) enjoying using FreeBSD/FreeNAS for a home file server, believing the array was all the redundancy I needed. Imagine my surprise when the system drive made a squealing noise and died. I've gotten some pointers from the FreeNAS team and think I've learned enough over the past year to call myself a FreeBSD sysadmin-wannabe (I thought I knew more until I skimmed the recent BSD certification questionnaire). However, time is obviously dragging on and it's time to find an expert (at least to confirm if recovering the array is technically possible without knowing the array configuration). I have raw images of the three 220G IDE drives from the array, and can also provide remote ssh to a server with the drives installed. If you can help, please respond with brief qualifications, a reference or two, any questions to clarify the situation, and proposed compensation (perhaps a donation to the FreeBSD foundation on your behalf?)
