Problems with compiling java programs on FreeBSD from ports

/usr/local/java/jre JChessBoard.jar
/usr/local/java/jre permission denied

I'm receiving a permission denied error even with
/usr/local/java/jre/bin/java as root.

I created a /usr/local/java directory, made the bin and jre/bin
directories executable with chmod +x, and set permissions at chmod
0666 for /usr/local/java and all subdirectories.

Are there any user groups that I need to add?
