Are you sure it was *indeed* openjdk version "1.6.0" running behind the scenes?
If yes, then you should open a PR.
Whats your /etc/libmap.conf settings?

Growing of opened files.... I test same code with same data on Ubuntu Linux, OpenSolaris and all ok, total size of java opened files is less when 1500. On BSD i get now about 48396 opened files and growing ...
