java plugin & firefox crash

Yes, you were right.  I deinstalled diablo and linked the jdk16 plugin with:

# ln -s /usr/local/jdk1.6.0/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
/usr/local/lib/browser_plugins/

I didn't realize that diablo is just a build dependency for jdk16.
