I tried searching in the archive, and I could only find discussions from late 2006. Now that FreeBSD 7.0 is out and we have a new scheduler, can someone comment on performance of Java on FreeBSD vs. Linux and others? I tried following the old thread and I believe it was inconclusive rather than that FreeBSD is definitely slower. Yet, there was an argument on how much slower. I would really like to know this information because I will be doing heavy number crunching in Java. A 20% performance gain could save me 1-2 day at a time. Thanks! I did run through the test on FreeBSD with no problems, its pretty good as it creates a HTML table of the results at the end. I didn't much time as well as have anything to compare it to, I tried to run it on a Windows desktop but it won't run as MS has deliberately designed windows non server for a low amount of threads so it fails a lot of the tests etc. http://www.spec.org/jvm2008/ If you were able to spot bottle necks in FreeBSD they tend to get fixed, the problem tends to be finding them, just like how they found kernel locking issues on UDP protocol performance these are now fixed but only after they were pulled to light. Just tried with tomcat-native-1.1.13_1 and jboss-4.2.2, and it works great. However for native tomcat your https connector must be updated to include: SSLEngine="on" SSLCertificateFile="/usr/local/jboss-4.2.2.GA/cacert.pem" SSLCertificateKeyFile="/usr/local/jboss-4.2.2.GA/privkey.pem" SSLPassword="your pass" your mileage may vary. > -Gianni > > _______________________________________________ > freebsd-java@freebsd.org mailing list > http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-java > To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-java-unsubscribe@freebsd.org" > -- Achilleas Mantzios From frank at harz.behrens.de Thu Aug 7 11:41:35 2008 From: frank at harz.behrens.de (Frank Behrens) Date: Thu Aug 7 11:41:44 2008 Subject: tomcat-native any success? For example, to grant 256MB of heap to Java use -Xmx256m. If you will not find any of these options, just find where the java executable is defined in scripts and then append the -Xmx right after the executable name to tell Java the new value for heap size. -- Eugene N Dzhurinsky -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Both FreeBSD 4 and FreeBSD 5 have reached end-of-life with respect to ports support. Many people are reporting good success with FreeBSD 7.0; if you are more conservative, you might wish to try installing 6.3 instead. At this point there are so many differences between what you have installed, and the modern variant of the Ports Collection, that you are probably in best shape if you do a reinstall from scratch. (Otherwise, you are going to need to upgrade source to RELENG4_EOL, 5.3, RELENG_5, and then to 6.X; I don't think anyone has done this for a while). It'd be interesting to see a stack trace from it to see exactly what was going on. If you built with the port, you should have a java_g and can do something like "gdb /full/path/to/java_g java.core", and then "thread apply all bt" once gdb starts. As an aside, it's a really, really bad idea to ever call System.gc() directly in a modern JVM. It's much better to leave it to the JVM to decide when to do garbage collection. 2008/8/15 Matthias Karlsson > Hi, > > this morning, we experienced a crash running 1.6.0_03, which is the > first one we have ever gotten. It only "suggests" that the GC do collection, and can be completely ignored... so if you're relying on some behaviour out of gc(), you're likely to see unexplained and unpredictable breakage across platforms. 2. Modern GCs are clever enough to know when is a good time to collect garbage; calling System.gc is more likely to reduce performance versus just letting the GC do its job. 3. On some platforms (like Sun's JVM), System.gc() will result in a *major* collection happening, which is probably more than what you want (and usually an order of magnitude slower). You're far better off *tuning* the garbage collector and heap sizes rather than explicitly trying to invoke the garbage collector. In many cases these ports are failing to compile on some subset of the FreeBSD build environments. The most common problem is that recent versions of -CURRENT include gcc4.2, which is much stricter than older versions. The next most common problem is that compiles succeed on the i386 architecture (e.g. the common Intel PC), but fail on one or more of the other architectures due to assumptions about things such as size of various types, byte-alignment issues, and so forth. In occasional cases we see that the same port may have different errors in different build environments. The script that runs on the build cluster uses heuristics to try to 'guess' the error type to help you isolate problems, but it is only a rough guide. One more note: on occasion, there are transient build errors seen on the build farm. Unfortunately, there is not yet any way for this algorithm to tell the difference (humans are much, much better at this kind of thing.) The errors are listed below. In the case where the same problem exists on more than one build environment, the URL points to the latest errorlog for that type. (By 'build environment' here we mean 'combination of 5.x/6.x/-current with target architecture'.) (Note: the dates are included to help you to gauge whether or not the error still applies to the latest version. The program that generates this report is not yet able to determine this automatically.) portname: java/java3d broken because: Does not fetch build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.FreeBSD.org/portoverview.py?category=java&portname=java3d If these errors are ones that you are already aware of, please accept our apologies and ignore this message. On the other hand, if you no longer wish to maintain this port (or ports), please reply with a message stating that, and accept our thanks for your efforts in the past. Every effort has been made to make sure that these error reports really do correspond to a port that you maintain. However, due to the fact that this is an automated process, it may indeed generate false matches. If one of these errors fits that description, please forward this email to the author of this software, Mark Linimon , so that he can attempt to fix the problem in the future. The JVM is trying to mmap 1064MB of contiguous virtual memory, and the OS says "no". The limitation isn't coming from the JVM. It's coming from the OS. The problem you'll need to solve is why you can't mmap more. Either there isn't that much contiguous virtual memory left, or you're hitting some other system limitation. I know there is a problem with the intel architecture that the PCI address space is placed in the upper parts of the 4GB memory space, so if you have 4GB ram, only 3 is visible to the machine as actual memory. The rest is PCI. I have 4GB in my macbook pro and I have 3GB available to the OS. > That aside, I have 16GIG of SWAPSPACE, and 3GIG of actual RAM. > > I am still unable to allocate more than -Xmx700M > > FreeBSD or JAVA is not tapping into my swapspace? Install from java/jdk1.6 In most cases diablo build works, but if you have any special needs I would advise full build (option 4). It will take more time, than any other option, but I am sure your own build will work better, than diablo one. It will use your own libraries for build, so everything should be fine. If you're talking about implementing MouseListener and maybe showing the a pop-up context menu, the recommended method is to check on MouseEvent.isPopupTrigger() for MouseListener.mouseClicked(), mousePressed() and mouseReleased(). It's all to do between Swing implementations differences between Windows and UNIX. Well, why? We run an Openfire Jabber/XMPP server and want to run this service with IPv6 support. So what is the situation. With the Diablo Caffe/Latte package, IPv6 support is not enabled. (I don't know why, maybe someone can shed a light on this?) To get Java with IPv6 support, we installed jdk15 (and later jdk16) using ports (java/jdk15 and java/jdk16). OOo's Java loader matches JVM vendor/release pair, not just release major number and fails because diablo-jdk16 reports "FreeBSD Foundation" as JVM vendor now. Previous Diablo JDKs were (mis)reporting "Sun Microsystems" as a vendor. I will add diablo-jdk16 support and send you a patch when I find some free time. ;-) Jung-uk Kim From saper at system.pl Thu Aug 28 13:47:21 2008 From: saper at system.pl (Marcin Cieslak) Date: Thu Aug 28 13:47:29 2008 Subject: FreeBSD Java, IPv6, and DNS SRV query type In-Reply-To: <48B29CB7.9010907@cs.vu.nl> References: <48B29CB7.9010907@cs.vu.nl> Message-ID: <48B6AC4C.1050006@system.pl> Benno Overeinder wrote: > Hi, > > Sometimes you just want it all: Java, IPv6, *and* DNS SRV query type > requests. I don't know what's wrong with your code (it gives me the same results) but I tried a small jython program: import java from javax.naming import Context from javax.naming.directory import InitialDirContext env = java.util.Hashtable() env.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, "com.sun.jndi.dns.DnsContextFactory") ictx = InitialDirContext(env) print ictx.getAttributes("_xmpp-server._tcp.google.com", ["SRV"]) the result: {srv=SRV: 20 0 5269 xmpp-server3.l.google.com., 20 0 5269 xmpp-server4.l.google.com., 5 0 5269 xmpp-server.l.google.com., 20 0 5269 xmpp-server1.l.google.com., 20 0 5269 xmpp-server2.l.google.com.} The funny part begins when I enter IPv6 DNS server address (I run one on my LAN) in /etc/resolv.conf (say, "2001:DB8::1").
