You can install it from ports. For more information installing ports,
you should refer to the handbook in /usr/share/doc or online at
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ports.html
You can install jdk 1.3 or 1.4
/usr/ports/java/jdk13
/usr/ports/java/jdk14
Or even one of the Linux jdks.
IDE for swing/awt try Netbeans: /usr/ports/java/netbeans
