% cd /usr/src
% make buildenv
% cd rescue/rescue
% make

I expect this to produce the same error as before; if not, there is
something seriously wrong.

Now copy the last command make tried to run (cc -static ...), add -v
before -static (cc -v -static ...) and run it.
