Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. r - repocopy The resolution of the problem report is dependent on a repocopy operation within the CVS repository which is awaiting completion. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. From marc.loerner at hob.de Thu Sep 11 08:45:49 2008 From: marc.loerner at hob.de (Marc =?iso-8859-1?q?L=F6rner?=) Date: Thu Sep 11 08:45:55 2008 Subject: Montecito running and little SMP-bug Message-ID: <200809111023.31516.marc.loerner@hob.de> Hello! I've got good news: Finally GENERIC-kernel without SMP-support is running now on my montecito box :-) (It was as you suggested, after wiping out contents and partitions of harddisk the bsd-installer started as expected) When turning on SMP, I always get an Page-Not-Present in function vcnt in vm/vm_meter.c when it iterates through found CPUs. I seems that pcpu_find returns NULL. This is the last output I see: fatal kernel trap (cpu 0): trap vector = 0x14 (Page Not Present) cr.iip = 0xe00000000f577cb0 cr.ipsr = 0x1210080a6018 (ac,mfl,ic,i,dt,dfh,rt,cpl=0,it,ri=1,bn) cr.isr = 0x20400000000 (code=0,vector=0,r,ei=1) cr.ifa = 0x9bc curthread = 0xe00000001029c000 pid = 64, comm = sysctl [thread pid 64 tid 100033 ] Stopped at vcnt+0xa1: [M1] ld4 r15=[r8] db> Following is the output of the APIC-table: Table 'APIC' at 0xe0000000ff1b6620 Local APIC address=0xfee00000 Local SAPIC entry ProcessorId=0x0, Id=0x0, Eid=0x0 Local SAPIC entry ProcessorId=0x1, Id=0x1, Eid=0x0 (disabled) Local SAPIC entry ProcessorId=0x2, Id=0x2, Eid=0x0 Local SAPIC entry ProcessorId=0x3, Id=0x3, Eid=0x0 (disabled) I think the case of running/enabled CPUs being not contiguous is not thought of when initializing pcpus. So the id is taken as index into pcpu-array (cpuid_to_pcpu). => In above case we find 2 running cpus => mp_ncpus = 2, but cpuid_to_pcpu[1] is zero (not enabled). It seems that platform independend code relies on pcpu-array not having holes and being filled contiguously. => We don't have to use "sapic->ID" as index into array (c.f. function cpu_mp_add) instead we need own static index-counter that's incremented on finding enabled CPU when iterating through APIC-table (see file sys/ia64/acpica/madt.c) Regards, Marc Loerner From tinderbox at freebsd.org Sun Sep 14 10:59:25 2008 From: tinderbox at freebsd.org (FreeBSD Tinderbox) Date: Sun Sep 14 10:59:32 2008 Subject: [head tinderbox] failure on ia64/ia64 Message-ID: <20080914105922.6B4A773039@freebsd-current.sentex.ca> TB --- 2008-09-14 09:28:57 - There are optimization bugs, which pretty much forces us to run with INVARIANTS for now. I don't think that's the problem. My box has disables CPUs as well and there are no panics there. In any case, if we want to support hot-pluggable CPUs, we cannot assume that if there are N CPUs, index [0..N> are in use... In any case, if we > want to support hot-pluggable CPUs, we cannot assume that > if there are N CPUs, index [0..N> are in use... > > FYI, I did following little patch in sys/ia64/acpica/madt.c in function ia64_probe_sapics: - added local variable (initialized to zero) for counting cpus - in local-sapic case: use local variable as first parameter in cpu_mp_add and increment it After that I sometimes went into an Page-Not-Present fault (see discussion of asymmetric mtx_[un]lock_sleep on hackers mailinglist). After some more debugging I recognized that curthread and access to pcpu in machine-dependent code (sys/ia64/include/pcpu.h) is not preemption-ready. So I made some little adaption from sys/amd64/include/pcpu.h. => Since today, I'm testing stability of SMP-kernel (7.0-RELEASE-p3) with these two bugfixes and without invariant and witness support.
