From marc.loerner at hob.de Tue Nov 18 05:27:04 2008 From: marc.loerner at hob.de (Marc =?iso-8859-1?q?L=F6rner?=) Date: Tue Nov 18 05:27:10 2008 Subject: problem with more cpus than MAXCPU Message-ID: <200811181359.42291.marc.loerner@hob.de> Hello, on booting a montecito machine with sources from 7.0-Release-p3 I get an Page-Not-Present fault in vcnt on access of pcpu-struct. I think this is because of mp_ncpus being the real core number of the machine (ia64_count_cpus) and mp_maxid being the cores used (also number of pcpu-structs malloced in pcpu-struct). Also I think (on comparing to other architectures and usage in vcnt) that mp_ncpus should be the number of real active cores with malloced pcpu. So my quick-fix was to put following line after "mp_maxid = min(mp_ncpus, MAXCPU) - 1;": mp_ncpus = mp_maxid + 1; Regards, Marc Loerner From marc.loerner at hob.de Thu Nov 20 01:03:44 2008 From: marc.loerner at hob.de (Marc =?iso-8859-1?q?L=F6rner?=) Date: Thu Nov 20 01:03:51 2008 Subject: sys/ia64/include/pcpu.h patch proposal Message-ID: <200811200943.40672.marc.loerner@hob.de> Hello, attached is a patch of pcpu.h against current to make access of pcpu-structures preemption-ready (like in amd64). I thought that only curthread() is critical. All other PCPU accesses are sufficiently protected by context. Is that not the case? In other words, wouldn't it be enough to declare pcpup as volatile? Besides that: yes there's an atomicity problem getting to the PCPU. I'm not sure your patch fixes that because a thread can move to another CPU after obtaining the address of some field in the PCPU and before reading from that address. Unless all accesses are protected by context, in which case there's no problem now I think... -- Marcel Moolenaar xcllnt@mac.com From tinderbox at freebsd.org Thu Nov 20 19:36:12 2008 From: tinderbox at freebsd.org (FreeBSD Tinderbox) Date: Thu Nov 20 19:36:23 2008 Subject: [head tinderbox] failure on ia64/ia64 Message-ID: <20081121033609.3D07B73039@freebsd-current.sentex.ca> TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:17 - tinderbox 2.5 running on freebsd-current.sentex.ca TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:17 - starting HEAD tinderbox run for ia64/ia64 TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:17 - cleaning the object tree TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:48 - cvsupping the source tree TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:48 - /usr/bin/csup -z -r 3 -g -L 1 -h localhost -s /tinderbox/HEAD/ia64/ia64/supfile TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:55 - building world TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:55 - MAKEOBJDIRPREFIX=/obj TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:55 - PATH=/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/sbin TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:55 - TARGET=ia64 TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:55 - TARGET_ARCH=ia64 TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:55 - TZ=UTC TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:55 - __MAKE_CONF=/dev/null TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:55 - cd /src TB --- 2008-11-21 01:26:55 - /usr/bin/make -B buildworld >>> World build started on Fri Nov 21 01:26:57 UTC 2008 >>> Rebuilding the temporary build tree >>> stage 1.1: legacy release compatibility shims >>> stage 1.2: bootstrap tools >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2.3: build tools >>> stage 3: cross tools >>> stage 4.1: building includes >>> stage 4.2: building libraries >>> stage 4.3: make dependencies >>> stage 4.4: building everything >>> World build completed on Fri Nov 21 03:14:18 UTC 2008 TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - generating LINT kernel config TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - cd /src/sys/ia64/conf TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - /usr/bin/make -B LINT TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - building LINT kernel TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - MAKEOBJDIRPREFIX=/obj TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - PATH=/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/sbin TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - TARGET=ia64 TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - TARGET_ARCH=ia64 TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - TZ=UTC TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - __MAKE_CONF=/dev/null TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - cd /src TB --- 2008-11-21 03:14:18 - /usr/bin/make -B buildkernel KERNCONF=LINT >>> Kernel build for LINT started on Fri Nov 21 03:14:19 UTC 2008 >>> stage 1: configuring the kernel >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2.3: build tools >>> stage 3.1: making dependencies >>> stage 3.2: building everything [...] :> hack.c cc -shared -nostdlib hack.c -o hack.So rm -f hack.c MAKE=/usr/bin/make sh /src/sys/conf/newvers.sh LINT cc -c -O2 -pipe -fno-strict-aliasing -std=c99 -Wall -Wredundant-decls -Wnested-externs -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes -Wpointer-arith -Winline -Wcast-qual -Wundef -Wno-pointer-sign -fformat-extensions -nostdinc -I. -I/src/sys -I/src/sys/contrib/altq -I/src/sys/contrib/ia64/libuwx/src -D_KERNEL -DHAVE_KERNEL_OPTION_HEADERS -include opt_global.h -fno-common -finline-limit=15000 --param inline-unit-growth=100 --param large-function-growth=1000 -fno-builtin -mconstant-gp -ffixed-r13 -mfixed-range=f32-f127 -fpic -ffreestanding -Werror vers.c linking kernel hwpmc_mod.o(.text+0xa2f2): In function `load': : undefined reference to `pmc_md_finalize' *** Error code 1 Stop in /obj/ia64/src/sys/LINT. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src. This is the "boot only" CD, which I thought I might be able to use to install. I still don't know what it is for. 7.1beta2, same thing, except no buzzing sound (possibly because I didn't, like, reset the previous error?) This is an HP Integrity rx2600. One internal 73gig scsi hard drive. One external USB optical drive. Serial console. Linux works on it. (anyone know how to affordably get HP-UX and/or OpenVMS?) I updated some (all?) firmware. Could be it doesn't like booting off a USB CD?? The machine doesn't have an internal optical drive. Linux installed ok this way. I'll probably have an internal optical drive soon. Machine bought used/cheap on eBay. serial console output: 7.0: EFI version 1.10 [14.61] EFI64 Running on Intel(R) Itanium Processor Family EFI 1.10 IPF zx6000/rx2600/zx2000 1.22 [Thu Mar 11 14:22:35 2004] - HP Copyright (c) 2000-2002 Broadcom Corporation Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet EFI driver v3.0.7 Loading 'FPSWA'...
