It looks to me that the low-level serial console works, but that
the UART is not found during bus-enumeration so that when you
try to get to multi-user (which happens after "Trying root...")
there's no device to open. Watch the boot and see if there's an
uart marked as console, like:

uart3: <16550 or compatible> iomem 0xff5e0000-0xff5e0007 irq 34 on acpi0
uart3: [FAST]
uart3: console (115200,n,8,1)
