The behaviour you have noticed is due to the default for the
hw.ata.atapi_dma sysctl changing from 0 to 1 before 5.3 was released.
Booting in safe mode changes this back to zero, which is why the
CD-ROM drive works again when booted in safe mode.  hw.ata.atapi_dma
defaulted to zero again for 5.5-RELEASE.

Do you still have this same problem with a 6.x version of FreeBSD?
