I've had some more time to tinker with this issue.
When booting from 5.3-RELEASE install floppies (not the CD), the system
boots fine.
When there are no drives attached to the TX2000 but it is still in the
machine, the system also boots fine off of the CD.
A side-effect of this bug is that FreeSBIE v1.1 also does not boot with
the drives attached. I have not tried attaching a blank drive to the
TX2000.
I took some photos of what the 5.3-RELEASE actually displays on my
monitor, and was able to patch this together from several photos,
(because it scrolls by so fast):

Attached you can find the output of my dmesg (after installing from
floppies), and my pciconf -lv. The system boots like a charm off of the
RAID array.
The issue is the install CD bootstrap is borked.
