For the newbies wishing to set up a cheap machine with reasonable power consumption, I can suggest the Atom processor. I bought one recently (the Intel D945GCLF2) and it performs quite well compared to my previous C3-based VIA board. I have not got round to try the sound yet and still share the IDE port between a HD and a DVD drive but the results are really promising. Note: the first set up requires a bit of fiddling around to get the system to start: there seems to be something weird with either IDE controller (need to disable the SMART mode) or the graphics memory (yes, it is shared with the system) but, all in all, it's a decent investment for a small server. I'll drop a line if something goes wrong but currently it's running happily 5 compiles in parallel... Installed without a hitch and no tweeks necessary. I did change the MCH fan for a quieter one though, as apart from the disc, it was the only noise in the box. The code is all there and has been there for some time: glxsb(4) - /usr/src/sys/dev/glxsb hifn(4) - /usr/src/sys/dev/hifn ubsec(4) - /usr/src/sys/dev/ubsec I'm not sure about the kernel options, but all of the above are typically built as modules with the GENERIC kernel. After loading the module, the devices are then made available through the cryptodev(4) driver. You will may find that for any fairly modern dual-core CPU (even an Athlon64 X2), the CPU will outperform pretty much all of the hardware crypto-accelerator offerings, except for the most recent and high-end. This is *especially* true when you are doing many small cryptographic operations, which I assume Tor may be doing. In the testing I've done, the hifn, ubsec, and glxsb devices all work quite well. I haven't seen any problems with any of them. I've tried the following patch, http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=kern/129784 , which may have helped - it picks up 6-8 out of 9 disks, but obviously that's not ideal. The motherboard BIOS version is current, as is the firmware for the SATA controllers. Does anyone have any ideas or other patches that I may try? I came to conclusion that rum is broken. But I think I remmember that bwi(4) (as a client) did not have such problem ... (I will test again to see)
