I'd rather think GEOM labelling and letting nature take its course is the 
best invention since sliced bread if you're dealing with more than two 
drives (you might try fighting the squid salad you're facing with 24 
unmarked SAS lines coming out of some port extender or trying to remember 
which drawer was connected to which link). And with a large number  of 
drives investing some money in a controller that will help you getting 
things done (usually made by LSI these days) wouldn't be a mistake, either 
(also considering the tools that are available). And as Alan Somers already 
mentioned, there are those sg3 utils (http://sg.danny.cz/sg/sg3_utils.html), 
too.
