Unfortunately, I do not have a copy of the original Bourne shell, but
bash in both bash and sh mode disagrees; zsh in both sh and ksh mode
disagrees; pdksh disagrees; the original AT&T ksh disagrees; and I too
disagree, since the expansion is not quoted.
${HOME+A B C} expands to A B C which should be split.
