And my question has been answered, in the form of the new libkse and libthr 
threading libraries. :)

Thank you all very much for your replies (just one reply here, to save 
littering the thread), and for taking the time to help me out. We now have a 
working system for the Speedtouch USB modem (which was what I set out to do), 
and plans to improve it with the new threading libraries when they've reached 
stable releases.

And of course I'll continue to contribute to the FreeBSD project where I can.
