Now that might warrant some deeper investigation, in case that both
generations of ghostscript fail with the same error. I'm 100% positive
that at least ghostscript8 builds without issues:

Could you post full build logs from gs8 and gs9 someplace (pastebin.com,
dpaste.com, etc), along with contents of your /etc/make.conf, uname -a?
