I commented out hald_enable="YES" and gnome_enable="YES" in /etc/rc.conf
and rebooted. Logged on as root. Plugging in camera got exact same result.
Just to be sure I uncommented hald_enable="YES" and rebooted. Same results,
no /dev/da0 created, nothing to mount even manually. At this point I did a

I don't think this is a Gnome issue anymore. Should I take this to the USB
list, or the questions list? Is there some USP configuration documentation
I should read first?
