Trouble with gnome session ;-0

Hi all:

I am sure this is just a futz up on my part somehow.. but be
darned if I can figure out what I am missing.

I upgraded ports a few weeks ago, before bsd-canada (actually right
before), and when gnome came up via gdm on my console.. no login
window. Oh I can see the name of the machine, hit a button to
get preferences (use on-screen keyboard etc).. but no login window.

So I was heading for bsd-canada and thought.. gee I will worry about it
later..

So now I spent some time.. by first:

1) Getting the latests ports (from Sunday).
2) removing every port.
3) Building world
4) installing world (and of course the 9.0 kernel too) (I am running  
amd64)
5) make install xorg/gnome2 etc.

So I have just finished all that.. everything is squeaky new and clean..
And tada.. no login window ;-(

I do see this in the greeter log:

Nothing else looks out of place... the :0.log has just the normal X'y  
type things and no
(EE) reported.

I am sure it must be some snarfed configuration I have but I am at a  
loss as to what
it is. Any suggestion would be most helpful
