I can't help being curious why you say that.

Are you inferring that based on the fact that

   env PKG_CONFIG_DEBUG_SPEW=1 pkg-config dbus-1 --modversion

produces different output from

    pkg-config dbus-1 --modversion --debug

?

Or was there something else?
