empty GDM list

This is on a fresh install of 8.0-AMD64 and ports install of gnome 2.28. no modifications have been done

When GDM loads up, the window only shows my computer icon and the "restart" and "Shut Down" buttons. there is no area at all to either select a user account or even to manually type one in.

what files do I need to parse to check why this is happening? or does someone know a reason that would cause this?
