gnome-mixer doesn't find my Intel 82801G HDA sound device.

GNOME always sees "Unknown (OSS Mixer)" but this shouldn't be a problem.
I'm using snd_hda on RELENG_7, and I am able to adjust my sound settings
just fine in GNOME.  What errors do you get?
