After reading this i realized i had LC_ALL set to en_GB-UTF8 ... with
that setting enabled i get SIGABORTs ... unsetting it "fixes" the
observed problem.

Hopefully that will provide you with a locale setting to test with
that you can actually "read/understand" ... no disrespect intended to
our Russian friends of course ;)
