hald not seeing added disk (some times)

I've been having this problem on and off too.  Not sure if this is
related to the disk occasionally becoming unreadable and the fact that
the device seems to detatch and reattach at random.  I need to get
another usb drive here to see if it's probably OS or hardware related.
