gnome start-up issues

[J. W. Ballantine]

I start gnome with exec gnome-session in .xinitrc.

ps shows:
 783  ?? Ss {running time} /usr/local/bin/dbus-daemon --system
 790  ?? I  {running time} dbus-daemon --session --print-addess --nofork
1057  ?? Rs {running time} dbus-daemon --fork --print-address 15 --print-pid 17
XXXX  ?? S  {running time} dbus-daemon --fork --print-address 15 --print-pid 17

when the pid for the second dbus-daemon --fork keeps incrementing with
a running time of 0:00:00.

There is no running instance of gnome-vfs-daemon according to ps,  it
just keeps exiting on signal 6.
