The Makefiles will need to be hacked to allow avahi-qt3 to build against
an installed version of libavahi-common. See
x11-toolkits/vte/files/patch-python_Makefile.in for an example.
Installing the .pc file manually will also not be a problem. If you're
still having trouble, I'll take a crack at it, but I won't be able to
test it.

Problem with your initial approach is that kdnssd-avahi will never build
on pointyhat. The slave port will be buildable.
