"Volume management not supported" error when attempting to run Removable Drives and Media

I got round this in the end., I had some legacy entries in the account's .xinitrc:

"exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session gnome-session"

that I changed to simply read: "exec gnome-session", rebooted, and this now that menu
application works fine for me now.
