ok, that fixed it. thanks!
i observe that ~/.config and ~/.local have not been recreated.
and, the first time i restarted gnome, i got a gnome-settings
pop-up bomb, see <http://rip.psg.com/~randy/settings.png>.
and, gnome-save-settings still doesn't let me restart with all
my xterms (gnome windows) open. :-(
