Slow Gnome 2.12

Good Morning,

yesterday I installed Gnome 2.12 on FreeBSD 5.4 as package.

I was surprised how slow Gnome 2.12 draws text. 
An example: when I click on a menuitem - no matter if it is a desktop
menu or an application menu - it draws first the frame of the menu
widget and then after about two seconds the items are drawn.

What is the problem? 
We want to upgrade about 200 clients in our company but this behavior is
not acceptable.
