gnome start-up issues

Joe,
Thanks for the response, I put gnome_enable="YES" in /etc/rc.conf,
and I still get the exact same outcome.
Another thing that is occuring is that after shuttind down the gnome
desktop, I can no longer become su without exiting and then re-logining on.
