user haldaemon does not exist

Here is my printenv under root, and no
PACKAGE_BUILDING seems to be defined. 

I am going to attribute it to the problems I had
installing gnome (dodgy disc) as I seem to be the only
one it has affected.

I managed to install a barebones user haldaemon via
adduser:
the result in master.passwd file

haldaemon:*LOCKED**:560:560::0:0:Hal Daemon
User:nonexistent:/usr/sbin/nologin
